Bobby and Karlien’s VIA moves Afrikaans audiences

26 January 2017

It’s been on air only three weeks but the new reality programme Bobby en Karlien: In jou skoene (DStv channel 147) has already burrowed deep into the hearts of viewers and reaffirmed lifestyle channel VIA’s place in the Afrikaans television market. After the first episode the programme, which started on 11 January and is sponsored by TOYOTA, shot up the channel’s ratings ladder and is now VIA’s most-watched show.

In the show, produced by Brainwave Productions, the brother and sister team of Bobby and Karlien van Jaarsveld leave their privileged lives behind for 48 hours to enter the world of people with vastly different realities.

In each episode this famous duo tackle a new challenge. In the first episode they visited the Abraham Kriel children’s home in Modimolle, Limpopo. A crowd-funding initiative on Candystick was launched in conjunction with the episode and within two weeks R65 390 had been donated to the children’s home. “We are so grateful,” Gerda van der Merwe, the home’s executive officer, says. “Firstly to Bobby and Karlien who brought the children’s stories to people’s attention, secondly to VIA who involved the Abraham Kriel children’s home in the initiative and thirdly to the public for their incredible support. We are so thankful for this contribution because it makes the financial strain so much lighter.”

After episode three, another crowd-funding initiative was launched on the Candystick platform to collect money for the Hanna Charity and Empowerment Foundation after Bobby and Karlien spent two days in the under-privileged neighbourhood of Elandspoort in Pretoria. “I think Bobby and Karlien as well as their guests deserve all the honour. The show’s honesty and integrity are what move viewers. It’s fascinating to see those who were initially skeptical about the show are now sharing in Bobby and Karlien’s journey. It is an absolute privilege for VIA to be the platform for these stories,” says Izelle Venter, channel head of VIA.
