Meet NG KIDS' budding chefs
After many scrumptious taste testings the winners of the NG KIDS Young Chefs competition appear in the October issue of the magazine. Mouth-watering entries were received from kids aged 14 and under. The four young chefs each won prizes worth more than R3 000, including baking and cooking kits, a year's membership of The Cooking Club for Kids and a Snappy Chef induction stove.
The first 30 entrants also received a year's free membership of The Cooking Club for Kids.
"The standard of entries we received this year was phenomenal," NG KIDS editor Fiona Thomson says. "This could be attributed to the rise and interest in cooking shows and contests that motivated our readers to put their own twists on ordinary dishes." The four category winners are Rebecca Oosthuizen (10) of Bromhof, Lenieke Louw (5) of Roodepoort, Samia Naidoo (8) of Lenasia and Claire Bodley (14) of Port Elizabeth. -

Saktyd winner announced
Huisgenoot and kykNET's reality series, Saktyd, ended recently and Capetonian Christiaan Boonzaier (26) has emerged as the victor. It was a toss-up between him and Astrid Lippert-Fisher (32) of Muizenberg in the final round but Christiaan, currently a proofreader and copywriter at a Cape Town ad agency, eventually pulled it off, landing himself a job at Huisgenoot. "I'm so excited and can't wait for all the challenges," an emotional Christiaan said just after the announcement at Huisgenoot-Skouspel at Sun City.
The 13 participants competed against each other over 13 weeks and had to complete a variety of challenges. Saktyd was consistently among the top 20 programmes on kykNET and often among the top 10. The judges for the series, Huisgenoot, YOU and DRUM editor in chief Izelle Venter, Huisgenoot deputy editor Wicus Pretorius and Huisgenoot senior reporter Haidee Muller, interviewed prospective participants earlier this year in Bloemfontein, Cape Town and Johannesburg. "It was gratifying to see how much talent there is out there and that we can confidently look for journalists in other industries," Izelle says. "Saktyd again made us realise what unique talents it takes to make a successful Huisgenoot journalist. We're convinced Christiaan is that kind of person."

Pedal for a good cause
Entries for Die Burger's cycle tour, the second biggest cycling event in the Western Cape, are now open. "Take part in this year's Die Burger cycle tour and support a good cause," invites Die Burger editor Bun Booyens. "This popular cycle tour takes place just before the festive season on 2 December so we decided to link it with Die Burger's Christmas fund." The event starts and ends at Stellenbosch High School.
Participants can choose between two distances: a 92-km route for experienced cyclists and a shorter 44-km route for novices. The longer route is the last qualifying event for the 2013 Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour. As part of your entry you can make a R10, R20 or R30 donation to Die Burger's Christmas Fund. Proceeds are used for the maintenance of Die Burger beach house, a holiday resort for school groups, underprivileged children and the annual youth leaders conference. To enter online go to www.dieburgerfietstoer.co.za.

Khanyi's book draws the crowds
Actress and socialite Khanyi Mbau's biography was launched with great fanfare at Exclusive Books Melrose Arch in Johannesburg last week. The book was written by City Press journalist Lesley Mofokeng and has one of the most irreverent titles the South African public has seen in a long time – Bitch, please! I'm Khanyi Mbau. Fans, entertainment journalists and other well-heeled Jozi residents packed the store to hear what Mbau had to say during an open discussion with Mofokeng. The book has drawn much media attention and has been on Nielsen Bookscan's list of top-sellers for the past six weeks.
