Huisgenoot’s centenary movie, Vir die Voëls, has already earned more than R8,5 million at the box office and attracted 165 000 movie-lovers to the theatre. This makes Vir die Voëls, based on two Huisgenoot readers’ love story, the fifth biggest Afrikaans box office earner ever. Only Vir Altyd, Liefling, Pad na Jou Hart and Semi-Soet have outperformed it at the box office.
“The main actors in Vir die Voëls are rising stars compared with the other top movies’ more established actors, making its success even more remarkable,” Huisgenoot editor Henriëtte Loubser says.
“Our young actors, Simoné Nortmann and Francois Jacobs, acquitted themselves brilliantly. We want to thank producer Danie Bester of The Film Factory, director Quentin Krog and the rest of the team for this tour de force and along with our partner, kykNET-Films, look forward to Vir die Voëls’ release on DVD near Valentine’s Day.”
